Most of my friends knows what I’ve been working on, but few have actually seen it. This is one of the 2 games I’m working on at the moment – STRAW HAT SAMURAI 2, sequel to Straw Hat 1 of the Golden Joystick glory.

I’m working with Lut on the game, but mainly in-charge of the artwork – art direction, concept art, in-game art, character design and animation. It’s tiring as it is fun to work on every aspect. That’s always the best part of working on a casual game. The results are fast enough, and the project doesn’t last so long to get anyone bored. I’m loving it (like McDonald’s 2 dollar meal).
Anyway, here’s a bit of the background art. 4 different stages- forest, battlefield, mountain and ancient fort. They’re not finalize, but probably only open for minor tweak.
IMAGES REMOVED
I’m trying to set a very different mood and tone for the individual setting, while not compromising the gameplay nor straying away from the original game. I’ve made subtle enhancement to make the visual less cartoony, and slightly darker as Lut request. The Fort, however seems to be slightly plain in comparison at the moment, so I’ll see how it goes.
Well, there’s still time for improvement, so if there’s any feedback, it’s always welcome.
As Lut would have put it,
What say you!

Is the game side scrolling or fighting? I think the backgrounds are very nice in any case.
I like the forest stage most of all. It has a nice atmosphere. It feels somewhat soothingly cool. Hahaha~
Maybe you can add some trees/plants for the fort stage? Though it looks fine to me.
The samurai reminds me of Kelvin’s initial character idea, which also reminds me of Samurai Jack from Cartoon Network. Hahaha~
In any case, good luck with your work!

Nice to have a frequent visitor to keep the place alive. Straw hat samurai is sort of a side scroller. Hence you can see, there’s hardly any “real perspective”.
My personal favourite is the battlefield, but I do see why most others prefer the forest. The character was design by Lut, who did mentioned getting the inspiration from Samurai Jack to begin with, and I merely modify it from Lut’s previous render. Sharp eyes you have!

Well, Lut and I have decided to keep things hush hush for now, so I removed the images. I’m sorry if you came in late. The game will be out in January, which isn’t too far away. Stay tune.

Can say when in January it comes?
I’ve tested the first and it is one of the best games I’ve ever played.

We’re already in the final phase, so hopefully SHS2 should be out in another 1 to 2 weeks(some delay). I hope everyone is as excited about it as I am : )

The game’s finally completed ( for a while now), and I believe Luther had already submitted it. Anyway, I think there’s some administrative work going around, so when that’s done, you get your chance to play : )
